Facebook Rebrands as Meta
It looks like Facebook has rebranded to Meta. If you go to Meta.com you will see this message:
Connection is evolving and so are we.
The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection. Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future.
It will be interesting to see how Meta/Facebook will change social connections, that will likely include virtual reality and 3d. Meta.com is a strong domain name. However, IMO, it is a very generic name and hard to see it being trademarked beyond meta.com. So lots of meta related domains are registered prior to the rebranding and will prove to be impossible to defend in order to protect the new brand.
Since the meta.com domain redirects to a Facebook page, it is also difficult to speculate whether that name will replace Facebook or be used as an umbrella brand that controls Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and any new initiatives. Facebook is such a household name that replacing it with Meta will be extremely difficult.
I cannot see the new name replacing the Facebook brand. Only becoming the new name for the company.
